Afficher tous les Trinité rhumsTrinidad is a small Caribbean Island in the Lesser Antilles and is located close to the venezuelan coastline. After discovery in 1498 by Christoph Columbus the island remained first under spanish control, but passed the lead around 30 times between spanish, french, british, dutch and courlandic rulers. The United Kingdom gave Trinidad its independence in 1962. The diverse origin of its inhabitants gave birth to a particular culture of which carnival is an essential element. It is also noteworthy that two languages coexist on the island: French and Creole. When the British occupied the island in 1797, they also brought the sugar industry and its by-product rum with them. So Trinidad still produces rum in the british style (pot-still, rather heavy) until today. Today Trinidad only has one operating distillery left, Trinidad Distillers Ltd. (T.D.L), which was founded in 1949. The distillery is part of the Angostura company, which is famous for their aromatic bitter used in many cocktails. The island also is the home of the world-famous Caroni distillery, which closed its doors in 2002 after 84 years in operation. The Caroni rums are known for their unique dirty style and are very sought after on the collectors market, causing the prices to skyrocket for a few years with no end in sight. Trinidad rum is known for its rather complex taste, with notes of herbs, tar, leather and burned caramel. Beginners could try out the various TDL bottlings by independent bottlers to get an impression of Trinidad rum such as the Plantation Trinidad 2009 (RX9683) or the Rum Artesanal TDL 2002 (RX7783).

"Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Together with cask #5613, the best Caroni ever for me. A little more subtle on the nose, with the full aroma package of the Guyana Stock HTR Caronis on the palate: vanilla, caramel, oak, fresh mint, dried tropical fruits, plus the dirty HTR aromas. You can't get much more than that. The ultimate in tasting and therefore for me the absolute top of the Caroni Veliers."

"I had the chance to taste it blind, and my money was on an old Demerara. A nose of very, very old tropical Demerara, with lots of wood, but balanced by a fresh, almost minty character. Old tar, used to dampen the boards of sailing boats, and spruce too. The palate follows the nose quite closely, with a slight tartness: old tar and varnished wood. The finish is very long, both powerful and elegant, woody to the point of madness, but balanced thanks to the menthol. There's even a hint of salinity on the finish. A rum that tells a story of sailing ships, fragrant warehouses, old ropes and the sea. Splendid!"

"Un rhum que j’ai eu la chance de déguster à l’aveugle et j’ai parié sur un blend Demerara, Caroni et un peu de Jamaïque pour la vivacité. Et donc un flagon de la marine britannique. Un nez de mélasse avec des fruits et des esters. De la douceur en contraste avec un côté vif, pas mal d’alcool aussi. De la vieille corde, du pruneau, du vieux bois et des fruits jaunes. La bouche attaque tout en douceur, en contraste avec un nez vif. Puis les arômes sombres envahissent la bouche et seulement alors le côté vif réapparaît. Tout s’accorde en finale, comme si ce rhum avait été blendé à la perfection. Une finale extrêmement longue et entêtante, mais aussi élégante et complexe. Ce rhum raconte une histoire d’héritier, noceur et dépravé. Aujourd’hui seul dans son château délabré avec de beaux restes."

Was mich am meisten fasziniert ist, wie klar hier bei aller Vergleichbarkeit die Unterschiede zwischen Trinidad und Guyana Stock zum Tragen kommen - die Trinidad-Fässer bringen einen pointierten adstringierenden Charakter ein, der im ersten Moment schnell überfordernd wirken kann, de facto aber eine gänzlich andere Facette der 96er Caronis aufscheinen lässt und ein Feuerwerk an Aromatik eröffnet. Beeindruckend - die Employees-Serie lässt hier die erste Geige aufspielen. Ein Hochgenuss, jedes Mal aufs Neue."

"Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Beautiful Caroni with the classic sweetness of the '96 vintage. Relatively dry on the palate, the tannins dry out the mouth directly and prepare the ground for tar and rubber, wood, pepper, aniseed and coffee as well as the obligatory heavy 96 caramel sweetness. The alcohol content is also noticeable and provides some fire. All in all, a strong but nevertheless well-rounded profile and a worthy 96 Caroni that grows on me a little more with every new tasting. A great release."
