Velier Caroni 100% Trinidad Rum 21 1996

A great Caroni that combines the best from the 1996 batches in a balanced blend. Typical dirty notes such as tar and rubber meet dark fruit, spice and a deep, mature complexity. Powerful, multi-layered and full of character, a prime example of the Caroni style and definitely one of my favorites.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Top-Caroni und ein exzellenter Vertreter des grossartigen 96er Jahrgangs. Ausgewogen, komplex, Caroni-typische Noten mit sattem Teer, Gummi und Menthol, dunklen Früchte und schöner Vanille-Süsse aus dem Eichenholzfass mitsamt holzigem Nachklang. War und ist ein idealer Einstiegsrum in die hochwertige Welt der tropisch gelagerten Caronis mit mittlerweile auch nicht mehr ganz so einfach finanzierbarem, aber dennoch für Caroni relativ gutem Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis. Exzellent.

Very nice combination of Caroni notes, fruits, smoke and brunt notes as well as a hint of mint and a certain sweetness. Very well made fully tropical aged Caroni blend - very accessible and enjoyable.

Un Caroni de 1996 qui ne renie pas son millésime, goudron et fruits tropicaux à égalité. Une odeur de massepain qui donne son côté pâtissier à ce rhum. On le trouve encore dans quelques boutiques mais à des prix exagérés, comme s’il devait bientôt prendre l’ascenseur, ce qui est possible vu la qualité du breuvage. Plus assagi que le Navy Rum 100th et le Kill Devil 1998 65,5%, mais encore plus complexe et profond en arômes. Délicieux ! Regoûté et les fruits et la douceur prennent le pas sur le goudron. Un délice ! Un rhum clairement sous-évalué. La fin de la bouteille est délicieux.

Muss ich zu diesem Klassiker wirklich noch was sagen? 😉 Höchstens, dass er so harmonisch und geradezu sanft ist, dass ich ihm "nur" 90 Punkte gebe; mit ein bisschen mehr Dampf und Lokschuppen-Dreck hätte der Rum noch mehr Punkte eingeheimst. Update 2023-12-20: Online-Blind-Tasting 20.12.2023 mit 6 sehr verschiedenen, aber gerade deswegen ganz vorzüglichen Rums, von denen ich im Nachhinein gar keinen besonders hervorheben möchte, jeder hat auf seine Art gut geschmeckt und seinen Charakter in den Flight eingebracht, deswegen auch keine Punktvergabe. Ein tolles Tasting mit Freunden, bei dem jeder von uns ein Blindsample beigesteuert hat. Reihenfolge RX17286 RX726 RX9954 RX3604 RX39 RX12384 RX39 hat man nicht alle Tage als Blindsample im Glas, erlesen!

An iconic bottle. Round, warm, powerful nose. Fruity (mango) and spicy. It takes a while to breathe in the glass to bring out the typical Caroni notes. An animal note compensates for the restrained dirty workshop. Spicy, slightly sweet in the mouth. Now a mature Caroni. 🤩🤩🤩 This is followed by a lovely finish, which could easily be longer. Perfectly balanced Caroni magic. Very easy to drink. Hardly any other rum brings out the power of tropical maturation so beguilingly. And then that wonderful smell from the glass in the morning... 😀

Still the benchmark Caroni for me. A rum like a poem. Just the right mix of fruit and dirt. The price has risen dramatically, but these bottles are still available. Who knows how much longer.

After a few years, I took another sample and tried it again. I like the nose, less tar and menthol than I remember, more balance with woody but also fruity aromas. In short, the nose is very pleasant. On the palate, however, it remains rather bitter, less pleasurable than on the nose. A little greedy, but the menthol and rubber aromas are also very present, and once again they don't really make me dream. Final verdict: it's good, much more so for my taste than other, much higher-rated caroni (the 94 guyana stock, not to mention it). I'm therefore raising my previous rating, but this will remain a good rum Hors coup de coeur for me. At the release price, it was good value for money.

Brilliant Caroni. Harmoniously complex, beautiful sweetness, fruit, leather, rubber, tar, cinnamon. Right from A to Z. I like it better every time I drink it, especially because it easily competes with other bottlings. Absolutely top.

Delicious, balanced and very accessible. Great combination of dirty, fruity and sweet. Update: Tasted again in direct comparison with "The Last", i.e. the best round against the Eichstab 21 Caroni. Yes, the Last is a round better on the nose and palate.

Hat alles was einer guter Caroni meiner Meinung nach braucht. Die typisch dreckigen Noten, aber auch fruchtig, nussig, etwas Holz. Alles gut ausbalanciert mit leicht röstigen Abgang. Schöne Abfüllung.

Despite being part of the "Classic" range of Caroni from Velier, we have here an impressive 1996 vintage which is just as good as other releases.

Nose Some describe the smell as bicycle tube or gasoline. It slightly reminds us of the rubbery smell that greets you as you descend into the metro of a big city like London or Moscow. While this repels some, we find the smell very interesting and nostalgic and exactly what we search in our Caroni. Only to a certain extent of course, which ends when we talk about vintages like 1998 or 2000. Here, it perfectly enhances the overall structure, where we additionally find a fatty note of mangos fried in butter, spiced with some drops of eucalypt oil. On top of it, earthy tones of caramelized pumpkins and dried beetroots set the tone. And every tone bloody fits down to the point. With water: becoming creamier and almost flowery and perfumy now, with camomille, elders and sandalwood essence. Palate 1996 just rules! The fantastic roundness and profound sweetness, combined with the slight Caroni dirtiness are an amazing treat. We also find plenty of bittersweet flavours of chocolate, carob and cappuccino. Imagine a piece of dark chocolate that laid on a gasoline tank for a day (but not inside). Not to forget about the dried oranges and black cherries inside that chocolate brick. Contrary to the name, the body doesn't really feel heavy, more medium-bodied with a silky texture. Finish There are only few spirits that can show off with the length of their finish like tropically matured Caronis. You can taste dried oranges and black cherries for hours.
